  1. Hi, 2.39 is the Digital projection ratio that we make for cinemas, (DCP) at 2048×858 pixels. This uses the full width of a “2k” projector. The 1.85 version is 1998×1080 which uses the full height of the projector.

  2. When people say “Two-three-five” or 2.35:1, if they aren’t talking about anamorphic 35mm films from the 50’s and 60’s, they *really* mean 2.39:1… (“Two-three-nine”). The change took place about 1971 or so, and it was just the official standard changed to better hide splices made by the projectionist by having a slightly thicker frame line.

    1. Belated reply: I’m pretty sure the change to 2.39:1 was introduced by SMPTE in 1970 for just the reason you say, and in current practice “2.35:1” and “2.40” actually mean 2.39:1.
